Gnome Invasion

Questions & Answers

Can I continually resurrect a card such as an ally from the discard pile so that I can play it again and receive its "When first played" benefits?

No. You can, however, resurrect a card such as an ally from the discard pile and use its abilities for boon acquisition or gnome combat.  But, "When first played" means when first played or used in a game by any player.  Thus, if it is discarded due to a consequence from a gnome and it enters the discard pile, even if a player has not gained the benefits of "when first played," the card has been used or played and no player may receive those benefits once it enters the discard pile.

How many allies can I play on my turn and/or my neighbors play on my behalf per turn?

Allies are unlimited.  This means that you and/or your neighbors can play as many allies as desired.  However, you may only keep one of the allies that you played at the end of your turn.  The rest, except for the wandering heroes, are discarded.

Can you explain the wandering heroes card?

If you draw the wandering heroes, draw the next card from the boon deck and add +5 to your check to acquire it.  Then, draw the top card from the gnome deck.  If it is a gnome with a value, then add +5 to your check to defeat.  If it is a gnome with a check to defeat of none, suffer the consequences and then pass the wandering heroes to the next player.  The next player also receives +5 to their checks.  This continues until the wandering heroes make a complete circuit of the neighborhood and the card gets back to the player that originally drew it.  Then, the card is discarded.

Can the wandering heroes be resurrected from the discard pile and reused?

Yes.

Can the wandering heroes be used to help me with a second boon acquisition if a neighbor plays a card like "Deja Vu?"

No. They are occupied helping you with your first acquisition and gnome combat and do not have the ability to help with a second boon acquisition.

Why is there variable checks to acquire and defeat?

This is one of the features that makes this game fun and unique.  One day you could be having an adventure where a check to acquire is 4d6 for example.  You roll and the result is 4.  Wow.  This should be an easy victory if you don't choke with the 1d20.  The next day you play and the value is 24.  Ouch.  Still doable but a lot more challenging.  This could definitely have an impact on the outcome of the game and help determine victory or defeat.

For the Spy Guy, if undefeated, do the cards I give to a random neighbor come from my hand or the cards I have in play?

Both because it is random. First, discard all items, action cards, and extra allies or weapons you played during combat.  Then roll your 1d4. Shuffle all your cards in play and in your hand and give that resulting number of cards to a random neighbor.  You may then put back into play any cards desired keeping in mind that you may not reuse their "when first played abilities." Your neighbor may not use the "when first played abilities" either if those cards have already been played or had entered the discard pile.

What do I do if the Wandering Heroes come to me and there are still a player or players that could benefit from them but I draw the Spy Guy and they are the only card I have to discard?

Unfortunately for the other players, you must discard the Wandering Heroes and your “neighbors” will not be able to gain any benefits from them.

Please explain Gnitch the Witch in greater detail.

Gnitch the Witch can be a very formidable opponent depending on when you encounter her and whether or not you have allies. First, if you have allies either in your hand or in play, Gnitch the Witch bewitches all of them, including the Wandering Heroes, and you may not use them for this encounter.  Second, you add the check or checks to acquire the ally or allies to Gnitch’s check to defeat of 13. So if you only have one ally and its check to acquire is 7, the total combat check is 20. Not too bad and very doable. However, if you don’t have any allies and it is near the end of the game when you encounter her, her check to defeat could easily be above 50. Ouch. A lot harder to defeat without a little help from your friends.  If you don’t defeat her, discard 2 non-room boon cards. If you do defeat her, choose a boon deck and automatically acquire a random ally from it; reshuffle the boon deck; and end your turn. If there is no ally in the boon deck you chose, reshuffle it and end your turn. You may put back into your hand any allies that you hadn't played if they came from your hand. But, you may no longer use their when first played effect as they have now been played in the game.

Can I choose a different boon deck if the card I was supposed to obtain as a reward is not in the boon deck I chose?

No.

What is the difference between “from your hand” and “in play?”

In play are any cards that you have played in front of you.  They are turned face up for all to see and they help you during your turn.  Other cards that you have and are holding in reserve to play for yourself or your neighbors are cards that are in your hand.

For weapon ability, do I roll once when I first play it or before each combat?

Before each combat.  Sometimes it might be ok and sometime it might be awesome!

What is a food related boon?

These are boons are food or are directly related to food.  They have a picture of a spoon, fork and knife under their check to acquire.

What happens if the boon decks run out of cards?

In the significantly unlikely event that this does happen, create one more boon deck of 20 cards from the boons that were returned to the box during setup.  (I personally have not seen this happen.  However, it came close once.  We went down to 2 boon cards remaining in a two player game and we had five potential turns left.  I defeated a gnome that let me acquire the bottom card of a boon deck and it was a room.  This allowed us to declare victory with our sixth room cleansed, which was my first room of that particular game.)

What happens if I get two undead gnomes in my room area but don't have any rooms?

When you actually acquire your first room, discard it along with two undead gnomes.  If in the unlikely event that you have acquired a third undead gnome before acquiring your first room, just discard two undead gnomes and the room.  Keep the third in your room area.
